March 8th 2011 - Join Women all around the World that are meeting to support Women in war-torn areas.
It is an event that is taking place on the 100 year anniversary of womens' struggle to gain the right to vote. It's a fitting day and a great way to raise awareness and provide support for the women that have been tragically affected by the conflict in their countries.
Women for Women International/UK have been supporting women since 1993. They worked out early on that providing aid was not enough for women that had experienced such heinous atrocities, such as rape, torture and murder. These women needed to learn how to hope again. The idea of sponsorship was formed. For a minimal amount of money a month, a woman from another country, could sponsor a less fortunate woman in another country. This money provided not only a regular income, but also human contact through letters and photos and training for the women, to regain their dignity; provide them with financial secutiry and in many cases, to learn how to live again.
Last years event, in London, was attended by the likes of Annie Lennox and helped raise awareness for the women of the Congo. This year's events have been organised to continue to support the women of the DR Congo, but also to try to help the women of Afghanistan, before the country is left to its own devices in June 2011, when the troops willl pull out.
