What IS Going On With Charlie Sheen?
Looks like someone is in an almost permanent, public spotlight at the minute; Charlie Sheen, the highest paid actor onTV, was fired on Monday, March 7th. In case you haven’t heard, he's no longer a part of the Two and a Half Men - TV sitcom.
During the past year he’s gone from one form of trouble to another and has been in and out of rehab, because of drugs and alcohol abuse. His ex-wife and Mother of his kids, allegedly obtained a restriction order against him about a week ago too. So now he can't even get near his own kids and the Police allegedly searched his house for firearms. His whole life appears to be falling apart! To go from being the highest paid actor in U.S. TV, he seems now, a fallen man.
Yes, he used drugs, yes, he drank a lot, yes, he had a few legal problems in the past year – but, does that not make him human, with common weaknesses like the rest of us? Or, is he just the little boy lost? Or, is he the star that grew too big, got into drugs and has become something of a megalomaniac? Certainly, as an adult, he has the right to decide what to do with his own life. So, should the public help and support him, or do you do what you need to do for people involved in drugs and alcohol and leave him until he hits rock-bottom, loses everything and then either dies, or starts again? The latter worked for Robert Downey Jnr. and he bounced back!
Maybe we should try looking at why he started using drugs in the first place? People normally use drugs and alcohol as a way to escape. Escapism from disappointment, from pain, from rejection, from loneliness. What were his reasons? His fall didn’t start now. It started a very long time ago. Before the alcohol and drugs abuse, it would have started deep inside him, was it the fame, the power? Did the power or fame, the lack of privacy, the surreal lifestyle, did it corrupt absolute?
Does he need our help and support now, or does he need to hit rock bottom before he has any hope of coming back? It would certainly seem that this is a very low point in his life. But, can you feel sorry for him knowing what he has done and is doing to his ex-wife and kids? Do we, the public, even have a right to judge him? Surely we all have had rough patches in our lives and done some things that we aren’t proud of? When looking at Charlie Sheen, should we remember our own bad memories and remember how we felt at those times and find compassion for a seemingly fallen star?
The newspapers are obviously taking full advantage of his situation by writing about his problems and they are makin money, to justify the stories being printed too! Is that right? Is it ok to take advantage of someone's problems in order to get the audience?
One thing I realised at the weekend is that this is an emotive subject, with different views from different people, but one thing is true, he is definitely his own worst enemy. If you want your fall-out kept private, then keep it private! Don’t communicate videos of yourself and feed them like meat to the lions. Everyone now has an opinion!
My opinion is this – he is an adult and a Dad, he needs to grow-up, sort his life out and put his kids first. If the likes of Robert Downey, Britney, Kerry Katona can bounce back, then so can he – but, he has to want too! The problem is, I fear, that the world of Hollywood is so far removed from reality that you can easily get lost in it. Up to him, there is no one in the world that can help him, except him! Ball's in his court...
