Have you noticed how more and more men are sporting great big bushy beards of late? Here at Bingo Bliss we can’t help thinking there is some kind of anti-shaving rebellion going on. Most noticeably is Shane Lynch from Boyzone, with what can only be described as an impressive display of hirsute-ness! We’ve also spotted Chelsea and England footballer and ex Mr Cheryl Cole, Ashley with a bearded chin, and Zayn from One Direction has recently been sprouting chin hair.

Wondering where these hairy fellows found their inspiration, we take a look at some of history’s most famous beards:

  • 1. Santa – this lovable and cuddly gift-giver must be the ultimate in bushy beards? He only visits us once a year, but his beard always receives a mention in any descriptions.
  • 2. Captain Birdseye – similar to Santa, a white fluffy beard encouraged us to tuck in to fish fingers.
  • 3. John Lennon – his Jesus-style beard added extra oomph to his love and peace philosophy.
  • 4. Che Guevara – the Argentine rebel with a goatee-style cause. His cool look has been copied the world over.
  • 5. George Clooney – alternating between a beard and a clean shave, this is one hunky specimen who looks good rocking both looks.
  • 6. Gandalf from Lord of the Rings – if ever a beard symbolised wisdom and power, this is it.

So what is it about beards? Perhaps it is the aura of manliness that a beard exudes. A man with a beard shouts wise and butch, someone who commands followers, or in George Clooney’s case, fans. But perhaps the popularity is simply down to sheer laziness – are/were these men too busy to shave?

What do you think of beards? Do they increase a man’s attraction? Or are they an old-fashioned piece of facial fluff that should be shaved off?
